Blu-Con 1.0 Announced and Dated
You might be wondering, what the hell is Blu-Con!?!?! Blu-Con is a day long event held by the BDA to talk about, and promote Blu-ray.
Slysoft Continues To Outfox BD+
It should come as little surprise to you — assuming you’ve been following the format war — that Slysoft has once again trumped the now-laughable BD+ encryption, found on Blu-ray discs.
Managed Copy Still a Possibility for Blu-ray Disc
Home Media Magazine is reporting that managed copy may still be a reality after all.
The chairman of the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) Business Group and manager of AACS Licensing Administrator Michael Ayers disputed media reports that the final specifications of the AACS content protection system would not include Managed Copy for Blu-ray Disc.
AACS is the content distribution and digital rights management standard for Blu-ray, restricting copying of next-generation optical discs, and Managed Copy would allow Blu-ray users limited abilities to back up their media to a hard drive, and use Blu-ray Disc content on portable media devices.
“AACS LA continues to work toward a set of final specs and licenses that includes Managed Copy, just as it has been since the beginning,” said Ayers, “There are no plans to drop Managed Copy, and reports to the contrary are in error.”
Marketing director of the Blu-ray Disc Association Andy Parsons said that while Managed Copy is an “understandably complex effort,” he did not believe AACS or the studios would give up on it.

BoingBoing: New AACS crack “can’t be revoked”

BoingBoing is reporting that the infamous “Key” can’t be revoked by the AACS-LA, which is old news to those who frequent the Doom9 forums. From what we understand, the only way to revoke this key involves turning 150k XBOX360 HD DVD add-on drives into door stops.
EFF on the digg.com vs. AACS-LA showdown
![]()
Our first thought when we heard about the AACS key debacle on digg was, “Wonder what the EFF’s position will be?”. We think digg really shot themselves in the foot, as they should have challenged the C&D/DMCA notice on the grounds that the key was already public knowledge (Wired.com has had the key posted on their blog since mid February). When the “HD DVD Promotion Group” is a major sponsor of digg, and diggnation, what else could you expect from a site backed with VC funding? The thing we find so funny is: HD DVD is getting so much free press for this, much more than their $150 Million advertising campaign got them.
