Does the PS3 really have HDMI 1.3?
Update: The PS3 now decodes both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA internally (outputting it as L-PCM), but a hardware limitation prevents it from bit-streaming the advanced audio codecs to the receiver.
It has come to our attention that the Playstation 3 doesn’t support the most important feature of HDMI version 1.3, the ability to bit stream to your receiver the new advanced audio codecs (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD Master Audio). The PS3 only supports the “Deep Color” portion of the HDMI 1.3 spec. This is confirmed on page 21 the PS3’s own manual (see picture below), which can be found here. The main problem with this scenario is that only Dolby TrueHD can be decoded and sent as PCM via HDMI, while Blu-ray titles that have DTS-HD Master Audio (all Fox titles) cannot be decoded by the PS3 (it can only extract the legacy DTS “core” stream). We feel SONY has really miss led everyone into thinking that the PS3 would be able to bit stream the new lossless audio codecs once the new HDMI 1.3 receivers come out. We feel that everyone that bought a PS3 thinking it fully supported HDMI 1.3 got ripped off, and we will continue to feel this way unless SONY can make it up to everyone by adding the ability to decode the full DTS-HD MA lossless stream in the console (then sent as PCM to receiver).

There’s a Dolby TrueHD logo on the side of my PS3. Have you actually tested this with a PS3? sounds like a mere speculation
I feel ripped off. Why cant they pay for the licence , and let us download a firmware upgrade and we’ll all be happy. I dont want to buy another bluray player, if the ps3 is just as good. I also dont want to buy another reciever that decodes bitstream. Id rather have the PS3 decode and send 196khz PCM to my reciever. Id like it for free but id consider paying for this upgrade. Please Sony , give us a DECODER firmware upgrade.
The PS3 can only internally decode Dolby TrueHD and send it out as 5.1 PCM. There will be no differences, as the PCM track will have exactly the same bit-rate and frequency response as the Dolby TueHD track, so there’s no reason to get your underwear in a twist.
Can a Firmware upgrade fix this?????
Yes. PS3 having HDMI 1.3 means that is supports the bandwidth of that spec, so a firmware update could definately enable bitstream out for HD audio formats. Hopefully it’ll be in the 2.0 update.
1.3 doesn’t even matter - it would be nice to have it decode the DTS formats on the BD themselves though, instead of “just” the core DTS track.
This is the one place Sony really fell short. For the price and how Sony led on consumers the PS3 should have a PCM and bitstream audio option for HD audio. Microsoft simply dosen’t have a clue, and if Sony wants to stay ahead of the pack they’ll fix this major screw up.
This is all great but there is no one yet who has posted a comment that actually tested this theory.
Hey Sony, the labels for both HDMI 1.3 audio formats (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA) are printed on the PS3 and you can choose ‘bitstream’ for BD audio in the menu (v1.93, v2.0, …)! Why don’t you keep your promise? Is it really so difficult to provide a fix / update for these missing features? Providing just one of both formats over LPCM is not enough!
I am sure a firmware upgrade would fix this, but I don’t think it is all that important or necessary now if you are the type of person that needs to have every concievable sound format and you have that Home Theatre Dream room that we see in magazines. But most standard middle class American homes probably have their PS3 either in the living room or a bedroom. How much difference is this really going to make?? I grew up Playing the 8bit Nintendo and have "upgraded" every few years,PS1, then PS2, even the PS2 is still impressive, & the PS3 is unbelievable.
I have the 60gig PS3 hooked up to a Sony STRDG810 HDMI Receiver (with 5 speaker Setup & Subwoofer) which is then connected to a Sony 55in KDF-55XS955 LCD HDTV. This setup is my opinion is awesome, especially for gaming or watching a blu-ray. The room is around 25ft x 15ft.
You’re right, the sound is great, even with just DTS. But the new audio formats will be provided in the future and my AV-receiver can do it. Just the PS3 can’t. Sony has not delivered, what they promised! And btw - regarding the newest information they won’t be able to because of hardware restrictions. That s***!!!
This is a huge difference. No 7.1 channel support.

Surely the most important feature is the increased bandwidth, allowing 1080p!
Some of these comments imply that HDMI 1.3 was a well established standard at the time of the PS3’s design, but this is not the case. HDMI 1.2 was the standard, but Sony wanted PS3 1080p support, and were kept waiting to ensure their implementation would fall within the next spec version.
All these whiners should switch off their 1080p and pretend that the PS3 has HDMI 1.2, which is all that could have been expected at the time. Bad Sony for getting 1080p into people’s hands! Bad Sony, eh?!
Shelving unreasonable expectations about the initial PS3 release, and moving forward, it does need to handle the alternative audio formats (I’m sorely missing DTS-HD MA already). It really ought to be supported by the latest hardware versions + a firmware update. Now that Blu-ray profile 1.1 is out of the way, perhaps we’ll see some results.
ps3 owners are out of luck if they think their ps3 will ever be able to decode dts-hd master audio. it’s not going to happen and sony is just stalling off telling you until they think this format war is won. it’s about the same as the early profiles in the standalone players. it’s just now coming out that the 1.0 profile players will never be able to upgrade to 1.1 then they won’t tell you that you can’t upgrade to 2.0. get over it all you sony fans they don’t care about their customers- they’re playing you all for suckers and it looks about right. face the facts hd-dvd has had all their hardware in order from the first generation players on. they have full-featured extras on their movies -they have internet connectivity on all their players. and now they sell for $149. what is the advantage for blu-ray? the only thing i can think of is storage and that’s a non-issue since nearly every movie blu-ray has put out is on their single layer disk. i can’t believe anyone would even want to admit they were a blu-ray fan cause they have the least to offer. well i’ve vented now!!!

Funny, I knew about that before I bought my 1.0 player. No worries, I’ll be able to watch 2.0 movies in it as well. Just not the PIP stuff, which I’m not worried about, anyway.
As for the PS3, if Sony can incorporate a SW decoder for DTS HD MA in a future firmware release we’ll be OK. For audio mixing the player HAS to decode it (MA, or anything else) internally and send the result out as PCM, which doesn’t require HDMI 1.3 anyway, so we’re still covered.
(I have an HD-A3 as well. I’m neutral. Just wanted to clear things up a bit.)
Every Playstation product I have ever owned has broken. Every console!! This is why I may never support thier new console. Of course there is no HDMI 1.3! Sony took out a few USB ports. They took out backwards compadibilty so you could buy the titles online. They took out the rumble in the controller to make people buy them twice. They forced you to buy a player with thier new disc format so that they can monopolize. They discontinue all problematic models to make people buy thier bigger hard drive models. They lie about audio playback for thier Blu-ray format and HDMI 1.3. The 2 out of 3 of my friends have had thier PS3 break on them and they barley play it. I don’t have time to list all the other problems. It’s the most expesive console and they manufacture the most expensive discs. WATCH YOURS BREAK!
I think sony needs to get there act together with the ps3. There were people sleeping outside, waiting for these things, and now sony is trying to make everyone have to go buy a second blue ray player so they can decode dts and dolby hd. I think this is rediculous. I want to know sony,

PS3 Firmware update 2.3 adds DTS master audio decoding and output (and other stuff too) and is out NOW.

Now the ps3 can decode DTS-HD Master Audio but it can only be send as UNCOMPRESED LPCM 7.1 or 5.1 at 176.4KHZ/24bit or 88.2KHZ/24bit and 192khz/24bit. i think the bitrate is 6 MBps!!!
PS3 also decodes the 1.5mbps core of Dts-HDmaster and can send it via SPDIF at 24bit/96khz but only at 5.1
i cant wait for firmware that can send DTS_HD MSTR and DD true hd as Bitstream!!
