Samsung has officially added YouTube, Blockbuster, and .MKV/.MP4 support to select Blu-ray players via a free firmware update. Owners of the BD-P1600, BD-P3600, and BD-P4600, are currently eligible for the upgrade, there is currently no word on any of these features coming to other Samsung Blu-ray players.

Those attending Cedia 2009 (September 10-13) will be able to demo the service at Samsung Booth #925. We currently have confirmation of support with American and Canadian players, check your local Samsung site for more details. We assume Canadian owners will be locked out of the Blockbuster feature as the Blockbuster Online Store is currently US only.

If your player is eligible for the update and you have taken advantage of the opportunity, feel free to share your impressions below.

Have fun with this firmware update. After I installed mine to my 3600, it lost all internet connectivity. So while at one time I had both netflix and pandora. Now I have nothing.

Samsung needs to quit with these initiatives until they are properly tested. This is garbage.
