Rumor: Toshiba eyeing Blu-ray business?

During a shareholders meeting in Japan, Toshiba president Atsutoshi Nishida hinted at the possibility of Toshiba entering the Blu-ray market.

“It makes no sense to decide not to enter the Blu-Ray market simply because we lost the DVD-format war. We cannot change the fact that we lost, but we would like to keep our options open,”

During the format war, Toshiba had backed the ill fated HD DVD format which was officially discontinued in 2008. Since then Toshiba has vowed not to adopt the format, instead opting to show consumers the benefits of their regular DVD’s.

With Toshiba focusing more development resources on flash technology, many believe it will become the successor to disc based media. Will Toshiba use Blu-ray and DVD to fund a new format war in the near future?

How many Format War Central readers would buy a Toshiba Blu-ray player? Would any HD DVD supporters not buying Blu-ray yet be spurred to “jump in” if Toshiba does as well?

I would certainly support them… if I didn’t already have three BD players (laptop, PS3, S350).

Also, it largely depends on the feature set. If they can out match and undercut the competition, I think they could more than hold their own in the BD player market.

Of course, I’d be looking for integrated Wi-fi among the other usual inclusions.

    What about you guys?

I would by a Toshiba Blu-ray player if it supported HD DVD. I have hundreds of Blu-ray movies but around 40 HD DVDs that I still use so having a back up to my 2007 HD-A20 would be nice. I too have 3 Blu-ray players; a PS3, A S-550 & a Vaio VGN-AW170Y so I don’t need a fourth. I didn’t plan on buying so many HD DVDs but once Toshiba dropped HD DVD the movies became to cheap not to buy…literally $2 – $3 per on Amazon.com’s marketplace some with free 2 day shipping using AmazonPrime…in fact there are some ridiculous grabs still to be had.
