McDonald’s Sells it’s Share of Redbox to Coinstar

Many may recall seeing various Redbox units at various grocery stores in North America, did you know they were part owned by McDonald’s? It seems McDonald’s wants out of the movie rental business, to do such a thing they have sold their majority shares of Redbox to a company called Coinstar.

Under this deal McDonald’s still holds a few shares in the company, with this deal Coinstar hopes to expand Redbox’s Blu-ray rental business. Currently no price point has been announced although many assume it will be $2 per rental, sounds reasonable?

Anyone hereĀ  use Redbox? Are Blu-ray movies in a Redbox near you?

To be honest I have never seen a Redbox.

The supermarket I visit has a DVDPlay and I have used it once.

The DVD Play has three Blu-rays in it now… will use it again if they get a second title I don’t have and want to watch…

redbox is actually a really nifty idea and can be of good use if they were to upgrade to blu ray, I would definitely rent from there. They have red boxes all over where I am at in gainesville Florida. One at the mcdonalds and one at the kangaroo gas station

We had DVDPlay in MD @ the Safeway locations, and I always prefered it more – discs were not scratched like @ Redbox locations. I blame the clientele …

Here in the south now we just have Redbox @ McDonalds & WalMart locations, which is uber convenient. $1 per night rentals and a 9pm deadline for returns are very nice, since the rental stores are still @ $4 per new release.

It’s nice for my girlfriend and I since I don’t buy movies anymore, and don’t watch enough alone to justify NetFlix anymore. (My Gamefly sub took priority, but might be axed soon as well!)

We rent a few per month, not a bad way to spend a buck!
