Vudu is having a killer holiday sale on their hardware, the box is only $99 (regular $299). The only catch is you have to pre-purchase  $50 worth of movie download credit at the time of purchase. Even so, this is still a awesome deal and much better than the previous deal offered at Best Buy.

Vudu has over 1,300 HD movies ready to watch instantly, with many also available in their higher quality HDX format.

I still think VUDU and NetFlix etc ought to be GIVING their boxes to us for free. “Just sign up for an account and we’ll provide a box no charge.” Of course, it’ll be like cell phones then, and they’ll want you to sign a contract for some amount of time, and people will whine it’s “not fair” that they have to sign a contract (to get something for FREE…), and whatever. But >I< think it would be grand.

Sounds like a firesale – Vudu may well be the next of many who attempted to profit from video streaming. We’re just not there yet, especially with a single-purpose box.

I don’t know what you mean by single-purpose box… Last I checked my box I had more HD films than any store in the world, access to Flickr/Picasa/YouTube, etc. and a pretty damn good library of standard stuff. I’ve had my box for 3 months now and I am loving every minute of it. I only wish I had waited until the sale… What would be cool is if they offered some promo where you could buy a bunch of credit for a discounted price.

Does sound like a firesale – I figured they would be at the $100 price point these days anyway, to compete with Netflix.

Obviously some have not actually used a Vudu box. Comparing the Roku to Vudu is no different than saying, “I can buy a $29 DVD, who are these guys that think they can charge $200 for a DVD player that also plays Blu-ray” You actually go thru the process of browsing and selecting a movie and then judge pic quality and you will see Vudu is so far superior it’s no a race. I love my Vudu box and have found with 1,200 HD movies to watch I don’t buy discs anymore. That’s just me. But I know my friends are all coming to the same place.
