As happy as I am (a PS3 owner), it enrages me to see that the PS3 was always, and will be capable as a Blu Ray Machine – but these stand alone decks that have cost more or the same price, are not. Regardless, I made the right choice in the player, PS3 is the only one worth buying, make sure and add $20 for the remote.

It will not take so long for the standalones to get to the functionality of the PS3.

It may take a very long time before they can handle BD-J as fast as the PS3 though.

Price-wise I think that there is likely volume and subsidy working in PS3′s favour.

This new firmware only support INTERNAL DTS-HD décoding, NOT Bitstream. What the use to invest in a $1000 amplifier/decoder if it only used with PCM output?

The PS3 cannot bitstream the codecs due to hardware limitations. Tyler posted this almost a year ago here.

While I have not tested it I believe that the PS3 decodes internally and feeds PCM over the HDMI. Your $1000 HDMI capable receiver should handle that just fine. And since there it is bit accurate to the source, it doesn’t make any difference whether it is decoded internally or in the amplifier.

The new firmware update is awesome…unfortunately, the PS3 does not output 7.1 audio. I confirmed this by contacting Sony. If you wish to write Sony and lobby for 7.1 output, please do so. SCEA, ATTN: Correspondence, P.O. Box 5888, Sanmateo, CA 94402-0888
