hmm080406.thumbnail.jpgThe latest Home Media Magazine shows that the week ending April 6th was a slower one for Blu-ray Disc.

Up against DVD, we see that Blu-ray held only a four percent market share, comparing the top 20 titles for each format.

Even against HD DVD, we see Blu-ray with 64 percent of the market, compared with over 80 percent for the preceding two weeks. Perhaps the fire sale prices on HD DVD media contributed, but a decline in Blu-ray sales likely contributed also.

In the top 10 we see that Alvin and the Chipmunks narrowly beat out I am Legend‘s second week tally (another indicator that overall volumes are down), followed by No Country for Old Men, Enchanted and Hitman. The catalog new release Unbreakable appears at number 6, with the rest rounded out by the typical well selling titles Planet Earth, Pirates of the Caribbean 3, 300 and oddly a number 10 showing for the scenic Over America.

On the HD DVD side, little change – no top 10 appearances, with Bourne 2 and 3, Transformers, American Gangster and The Kingdom in the top 5 titles. It will be interesting to see what impact the I am Legend HD DVD title has on the charts next week.
