Playstation 3 Gets BD-Live
Well I am sure you are all aware by now that the Playstation 3 update to BD-Live is out.
We see over at EngadgetHD they have been playing around with it. At first they couldn’t find the BD-Live content on the War disc, the first BD-Live disc to be released, but with a little direction from ‘Dave C’ (I wonder who that could be) they found that the Yakusa Fighter game can be played over the network. Of course it doesn’t make the game any more compelling.
The Molog feature on the other BD-Live title that is available, SAW IV, may be more interesting perhaps – and certainly the Sony titles due in April should have something a little more worthwhile. It is interesting that Lionsgate is again leading the way with the new features like BD-Live and Bonus View.
Of course the first comment that showed up was along the lines of "HD DVD had this a year and a half ago". I question that this is true – while the players had network, if I recall correctly it took quite some time before any titles made use of that. And the real question (which equally applies to BD-Live content) is – how much longer will there be internet content for HD DVD?
Perhaps when Universal, Paramount and Warner release Blu-ray equivalents of their internet enabled titles they will make them ‘network compatible’ with the HD DVD versions and as such the server side will be the same for both. If not, I can’t see them keeping the online content running for a dead format. The same problem could face certain Blu-ray titles moving forward – as they become less relevant, will the internet content remain available?
It seems to me that important content should be on the disc, not down the wire…
