NPD: Blu-ray Interest Rising Slowly

Some interesting news from NPD recently. Apparently consumer interest in Blu-ray rose slightly last month.

Interest among standard DVD consumers likely to buy HD packaged media increased to 10.8% for the week that ended Feb. 20, compared to 9.4% for the week that ended Feb. 13 and 8.9% for the week of Feb. 6. HD DVD interest, not surprisingly, dropped to 8.8%, from 10.6% (Feb. 13) the week before and 10.9% the prior week.

Russ Crupnick, senior industry analyst with The NPD Group, cautioned the percentage increase indicated likely¬† not actual¬† buyers. “The number is fairly conservative,” Crupnick said.

Crupnick said widespread adoption of Blu-ray continues to be stymied by costly price points for hardware and software and general satisfaction with standard DVD.

Yeah, i guess even though HD DVD is being phased out there is still a huge hurdle, and that is what has been said all along, the prices of the players have go to drop. Somebody has to put a 200 dollar player out before i will even consider it. And im sure it has to go cheaper if the rest of the demographic sees the price of new releases. Granted, new releases on standard def are like 20 bux, they drop quicker than blu ray. Gotta figure out a way to get these prices of players much lower, and the return on movies will overcome money lost on the player

I think the prices are rising faster than the consumer “interest”, however; or at least they are rising in proportion to the curve at which they should be falling.

What makes you think prices are rising?
