There are a lot of release announcements and details out today. There are new release announcements for Devil’s Own, Sea Monsters and Batman: Gotham Knight. There are also new details for the National Treasure and sequel releases.
A couple of titles that fell off the slate appear to have been rescheduled, Saawariya from Sony and The Shawshank Redemption from Warner.
Lastly we read that There Will be Blood has been removed from the upcoming slate on HD DVD at Paramount.
UPDATE: HDD is now saying that There Will be Blood may not be canceled, but that the studio has put an embargo on release details until March 4
No related posts.
The HDD article about There Will Be Blood now says that it may not be cancelled at all, but that there is an embargo on release details until March 4th.
Yeah, I saw that, thanks. Update noted.
Do you think that means that Paramount will make their bluray intentions clear on March 4th?
I wish Paramount and Universal would let us know. Maybe they are waiting to see how much hardware on the HD-DVD front is moved to make a determination.
It will be interesting to see what they consider the cut off point to be – when it is worth making a release available or not.
I imagine that when discs are authored, the entire life of the disc is considered and the revenue balanced against the cost of authoring, etc. With a much reduced life time, I imagine that only the biggest movies would make any sense for HD DVD release moving forward.
Of course, the current slate will have already had significant investment… the question is … is it worth spending what is needed to press the discs … assuming their are lines still available to do that.
another thing to consider about releasing on hd-dvd is how many retailers are going to stock it? i still can’t beleive all the walmart’s here sent back all there hd-dvd’s
Perhaps it is safe to assume that online retailers like Amazon will stock them…?
Oh – so that is what happened to the Toshibas at Walmart. I thought it was rather odd to have the empty shelf space with the price of $150 on the players. Online, they’re still selling them. The A2 is still $250+
Over on BestBuy – they’re about out of stock. Selling the A30s for $130 (was $400 30 days ago)
And as some should know, the MS Xbox360 HDDVD addon is now going for $50
Latest rumoring!
Paramount has apparently dropped the following titles:
The Jack Ryan Collection
The Kite Runner
Sweeney Todd
There Will Be Blood

Also there is apparently an advertisement for Bee Movie on BD in the New York Times.

Interesting times indeed!
The more I think about it, the less likely I think that Bee Movie on BD is real – it is just too soon…
