The guys over at iLounge have put together an excellent article that compares the new Apple TV 2.0 HD movie downloads, to Blu-ray, HD cable VOD, and good ol’ DVD.

What they found out (all pale in comparison to the Blu-ray) didn’t come as a surprise to us, but we were expecting better PQ with the Apple TV HD  movie downloads. The film they used in the shootout was "Live Free or Die Hard."

Too bad they we not able to include HD-DVD into their comparisons…

But it was a good review showing the output quality of 2 types of Download services and DVD.

AppleTV’s color was way off thu, but had the best picture behind blu-ray, by a LARGE margin. What looks perfectly square on HD, looks roundish on DVD, even if it IS up-scaled. I would like to have seen a NON-upscaled DVD image as well.

Funny thou, a poster perfered the cable’s resized version over the others. He wanted less black bars. Er… the picture was not the right aspect, it looked wrong compared to the other two and the picture quality was sometimes worse than DVD…

I agree, why leave HD DVD out of the comparison?
