Joone says to HD DVD: No New Porn for You

digplay.thumbnail.jpgAccording to EngadgetHD, Digital Playground has dropped its neutral stance and will only release Blu-ray Disc titles. Joone, who if I recall correctly slammed Blu-ray in the ‘early days’ for not being porn friendly, did not note any technical differences for the decision, rather consumer demand from PS3 system owners being the driving factor.

Digital Playground will release Pirates this month and should have 11 Blu-ray Disc titles by the end of February.

It is not clear how long the HD DVD titles that are currently listed on the Digital Playground website will remain available.

Did you even read the article that Engadget linked to?

It clearley states “Digital Playground now plans to support both formats “until there is a clear-cut winner,” according to company founder Joone, who spoke with CE Pro last month.”

Engadget just twisted the article as they lean Blu.

Yep. The first line of the article says “Digital Playground has moved from neutral to Blu in the format war.” For the word “neutral” they link to their OWN STORY from December 22 that is about when DP went neutral. And the image on the side has a big red X on the HD DVD. I am not sure how many ways one can interpret the first line and the image, but my take is that they have dropped HD DVD. I guess they feel that ‘there is a clear-cut winner’… To recap, Digital Playground has gone from HD DVD only to neutral to BD only. Engadget does not reference any other site for this new information…

And if you tried to buy any of these titles today, you would find that all are available in HD DVD, and maybe one in blu, so your headline remains misleading without appending “Real Soon Now”

Well, that would kinda ruin the feel, don’t you think? It is not clear at all as to how this will play out with respect to current titles. I just thought it was interesting that this particular supplier is perhaps the first ‘studio’ to completely flip sides. In any case, I would not take this article so seriously… and perhaps buy all the titles you can while you can (same for Pan’s Labyrinth).

Dave I don’t think you understood my post. Engadget says that DP are going Blu exclusive but if you actually look at the article that Engadget got the news from, which is what you should report on, by clicking Engadget’s read link you’ll see that it does not mention them going blu exclusive anywhere and just reconfirms they are neutral.

Heh, it’s amusing to me that it’s “PS3 system owner demand” rather than “BluRay owner demand.” ;D

@ Mallrat – ok, I follow you now. Thanks for the heads up and it does indeed look like I need to modify my title … oh well.
