Paramount Poised to Move to Blu-ray?

DreamWorks.jpgFinancial Times seems to think so. Without stating any sources Financial Times is reporting that Paramount is poised to drop its support of HD DVD after Warner Brothers’ recent backing of Sony’s Blu-ray technology.

While currently exclusive to HD DVD, apparently Paramount is "understood to have a clause in its contract with the HD DVD camp that would allow it to switch sides in the event of Warner Bros backing Blu-ray, according to people familiar with the situation".

"It is unclear whether DreamWorks Animation has the same get-out clause in its contract with the HD DVD camp. However, Paramount and DreamWorks have a close relationship, with Paramount distributing DreamWorks Animation films. The two companies also signed their HD DVD contracts at the same time".

While this really only seems to expose the possibility allowing Paramount and/or DreamWorks to defect, it certainly gives us something to watch closely moving forward.

Yesterday Paramount told the WSJ that they were staying with HD DVD, tonight the rumor mill says they are jumping ship.

So, hypothetically, if they get out of their contract, what would happen to the supposed $150 million dollar pay-off the studios received?  ;)

true, para has said that it will continue to support hd dvd, but that does not close the option of becomikng neutral, meaning backing hd dvd and bd.

James, Who knows and who cares! I cant speak for all blu fans, but Id gladly welcome Paramount back with open arms.  Btw, my alter ego no longer exists, except on engadget but not for much longer.

Remember the Warner rumors? Someone spilled that WB was going blu after Christmas. They (of course) denied these claims….and then look what happened. I’d bet money that these rumors are true.

Oh man, remember when someone spilled that Universal was going Blu last January? Yeah, that never happened so don’t believe every rumor you hear.
