Video Business is reporting that Sony has announced Blu-ray sales of 130,000 units in the first 6 days of release. This compares with 400,000 units shipped to retailers. The number does not include discs that are offered free with Playstation 3 consoles. This is a new high for Sony, beating out Casino Royale which sold around 40,000 units in the first week of release.

I do wonder if this includes the box set. If so, then this number is a little disappointing.
If not and they sold far more with the box set then this is going to be a big week for bluray as far as sales numbers.
I would expect those numbers to come down substantially once the analysts actually report on the sale, same as they did for 300 and Transformers.
So Transformers sold 190,00. Does that mean that HD-DVD has better adoption? Or does it just still mean the movie stunk, even in 1080p
Whats hilarious is all the blu-ray fans who proclaimed for weeks that “oh you think Transformers sales were impressive, just wait, spiderman3 will blow them out of the water!” Well, in fact, we have 190,000 vs. 130,000, blu-ray getting spanked by 60,000 units in the same amount of time (6 days) and whats hilarious is they have 2.5-3 million ps3′s out there! Yeah, go blu-ray!
It will be interesting to see if the box sets are included. The wording of the article indicates that they are not. Also, it depends on how real the number are. the 190k for Transformers has never been claimed by anyone other than Paramount – the real number is estimated to be in the 115-122k range.
I am sure we will see some Videoscan estimates in a day or two.
What is potentially more interesting is that Ratatouille appears to be doing extremely well. Will be interesting to see the numbers on that next week…
Ratatouille is doing really well and I am hearing that a lot of people are also picking up Cars along with it, thanks to the promotions of buy both get $10 off.
Both look amazing in high def.
I do wonder what the numbers are once the trilogy is counted. If bluray gets at or near 200K, then it could end up being a real bad week for HD-DVD numbers wise.
