New Line Holds Back HD DVD Due to Lack of Region Coding

Hairspray-DVDs.jpgVideo Business is reporting that New Line Cinema will be releasing the title Hairspray day and date on DVD and Blu-ray discs only on November 20.

The HD DVD version of the title will be held back until the first half of 2008 due to the format’s lack of regional coding, effectively making Hairspray a Blu-ray exclusive for the Holiday Season.

To add to this the Blu-ray version will have a “Behind the Beat” picture-in-picture-type option allowing viewers to watch behind-the-scenes footage and commentary concurrent with the running feature, making it one of the first picture in picture titles.

The HD DVD will reportedly include Internet and Web Enhanced features.

The HD DVD version was reported to have U-control like PIP as well.

Also, I have seen it reported that it WILL be day and date released in some markets, that New Line does not have issues with foreign distributor release schedules. So it my understanding that it will NOT be Blu-Ray exclusive for the holidays in all markets!
