Sony To Drop 60GB PS3 , Price Will Return To $599

sonyPS3.jpegAfter pleasing some people by dropping the 60GB PS3 to $499 earlier this week, Sony has let it slip that they will no longer produce the 60GB version. On August 1st Sony will return to selling only 1 SKU of the PS3 in the U.S. (the 80GB version for $599). We feel this is once again Sony showing that they cannot do a permanent price drop on the PS3.

    So… they introduce the 20gb, drop that because no one was buying it, introduce the 80gb at the 60gb price point, slash the 60gb price, and ultimately drop the 60gb from production, effectively maintaining their usual $600 price point and leaving the consumer with no options.

    So in essence they are going to be forcing those people who don’t grab one of the last 60gb models to purchase the 80gb model that adds a measly 20gb (which is irrelevant considering the ability to swap the hard drives) and eliminates the backwards compatibility hardware in favor of software emulation that is dependent on firmware updates (which according to the European PS3 owners is very seldom and doesn’t support nearly enough games).

    I’m sorry, but this to me is just unacceptable.

    As a non-PS3/Xbox 360 owner, Sony just did the unthinkable and talked me OUT of buying their product. I was so excited to play Madden NFL 08 + GTA IV in High Definition.

    I would get a 360, since madden will be 60 fps on it vs. 30 fps on the ps3.

    Good thing that’s not actually true;
