There are a lot of people that still rely on the Sunday newspaper ads for their consumer electronics news. One thing that really shocked us this weekend, was how bad Blu-ray looked as far as the pricing. With the new $100 instant rebate for HD DVD players, one could pick up a new HD-A2 for $299 + 5 free HD DVDs by mail. If one also purchased either version of The Matrix trilogy + an HD-A2, you would get 2 more HD DVDs free at the time of purchase. We have are hard time believing J6P would purchase the Samsung BD-P1200 instead of the Toshiba HD-A2 based on seeing these ads.

How can this be seen as anything but desperation? Sure they will sell some. However, most people know that HD is new and expensive. When they see 8 free movies and a $299 price tag, it’s basically like a garage sale on HDDVD! Most people know that you find junk at a garage sale.
I think the BDA will be forced to offer some kind of deal in response to this.
The response is coming in the form of Funai offering cheap BD players by the end of ‘07. The PS3 will do fine at keeping the lead untill then. Just in case you didn’t know Funai supplies Wal-mart. The also sold 52% of all the DVD players sold in North America last year
